TIPS FOR PREPARING GOOD SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE FOR PRIMARY RESEARCH

  • Sekeran and Bougie (2010) identify survey questionnaire as one of the primary data collection tools which are essential in reaching a wider audience within a short space of time, which is essential in deciding the nature and type of research problem that is a key requirement. As such it will be both essential and critical to understand the type of data that is required in order to effectively manage the data requirements in a study. A setback in using a questionnaire based survey is that the research will be challenged by low response rate as articulated by Bell and Bryman (2011). Therefore requires careful attention into the process of research data collection plans that are established.
  • When a new questionnaire is developed, it is essential to conduct a pilot test for the validity and there reliability of it and assess whether it measures and implement what it expected to find. Giving adequate thought to the structure of the questionnaire is highlighted by Henry (2010) and Robin (2005) as key elements in structuring and setting up the right research questionnaire preparation process, which is both essential and critical for the research process in gaining the right findings. As such the range of roles that will be required includes clearly highlighting the research patterns and a number of labelled headings which provides for clear separation of research area questions. Simple languages which will provide the user with the ability to respond to the questionnaire better. Keeping the research questionnaire as simple as possible with the type of language that is used is one of the key strengths that could be derived in the process of preparing a clear questionnaire.
  • Providing for appropriate instructions in the questionnaire could be termed as another significant aspect of carrying out a clear research questionnaire and a process that meets the requirements of the respondents. Respondents are likely to better answer the questionnaire if the instruction are very clear and responds to the needs and requirements of the research quite clearly (Robin, 2010). Therefore the researcher has to ensure adequate thought process has been presented in the form of presenting the right research materials for the research processors.ÂÂ
  • Establishing different types of questions could also be an effective strategy as per Rock (2012) whom identifies that use of ‘Lickert’ scale could be an effective model in driving a research questionnaire which could ease up the role of filling the questionnaire for the respondent. Therefore, requires a clear thought process on how long it takes for a respondent to fill the complete questionnaire, will be important in driving the research success within the process which is critical.
